When pressed beyond the rehearsed version of the story, you can name what you were thinking, feeling, or uncertain about in the moment. The deeper layers of the situation — your internal reasoning, unstated tensions, real emotional stakes — are accessible rather than hidden behind a polished narrative.

When probed on the internal experience of the moment of confrontation, your answers tended to return to the external sequence of events. For instance, when asked what you were thinking when your colleague pushed back on your proposal, you described the actions you took in response — but not how you first absorbed the pushback. This is one of the most common gaps observed in strong candidates: preparation reaches the surface of the story but not the layers underneath, where the situation's real tensions and uncertainties sit. A focused area for practice in the weeks before your interviews.
